Psalm 37:7 “Rest in YHWH and wait patiently for him

Do you struggle with God’s timing? It seems like we all do. In a society that seeks instant gratification in everything we find it hard to accept God’s timing. We want our problems fixed how we say and when we say because our human self tells us that we know what’s best. Who better knows our needs than ourselves because “Duh, it’s us we are talking about. Of course we know what’s best for us.” If this is your belief system you are totally incorrect. How about someone with infinite wisdom on everything? How about the One who created you. The One who took extra care to carefully craft every single detail about you. Details down to the number of hairs on your head to the actions you take when hardship crosses your path.

I ran across this verse and was challenged to seek the Greek/Hebrew meaning to the words. My mind was BLOWN AWAY upon my research. I only made it through the first sentence before tears started and I never made it beyond that.

Psalms 37:7 NLT

7 Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.

It seems simple enough. Your initial thought is probably “Easier said than done.” Take hope in receiving this new knowledge as a reminder that God loves you and always has your best interest at heart even when you refuse to see it. Now the good stuff….

Be Still or Rest is simple enough. Rest in Hebrew is dō-wm or damam.

Broken down “rest” means:

  • to be “silent”

  • to be “still”

  • to be “quiet”

  • to be “dumb

With this God is telling us to stop everything you are doing and just be silent. Not just silent with your tongue but with your thoughts as well. Turn your thoughts toward Him. Stop trying to understand God’s plan in a worldly sense and have faith in him. Cut off the chatter in your inner mind. Understand that God already has your problems figured out.

The second ½ is mind blowing. “wait patiently for Him”. It is translated from wə-hiṯ-ḥō-w-lêl or chuwl.

Broken down “wait patiently” means:

  • to “twist”

  • to “whirl about”

  • to go about in a “circular motion”

That may seems odd or mistranslated. I was confused as well. As I looked more into it and Prayed for understanding I was lead to a deeper meaning. Ok, here we go. To “twist” or to “whirl” is literally

Dancing…..

In this verse God is telling us to be quiet, trust in him and just dance with him knowing that He is God. I can’t express how much love I feel from this verse. God just wants us to have a good time worshiping him. He wants us to enjoy being in His presence and grow in our relationship with him. Cast all of your concerns or struggles at the foot of the cross and just Dance with him.

Take it a day at a time. Make meaningful time to be in God’s presence and make daily sacrifices to honor Him. After I started to submit to daily surrender my faith and relationship has grown immensely. It doesn’t have to be anything major or take up a lot of your time. Just take time out of your day beyond prayer to seek God. Open your heart with surrender by letting God know that you can’t make it another day without Him.
